Months Between Calculator

Enter two dates and get the full calendar months between them — with remaining days and total days shown too.

What Is the Months Between Calculator?

A months-between calculator counts full calendar months between two dates: 2026-01-01 to 2026-10-13 is 9 full months and 12 days. Calendar months are slippery — they run 28 to 31 days — so the rule is: a full month elapses when the same day-number arrives in a later month (Jan 1 → Oct 1 = 9 months), with the leftover days reported separately. This is the convention rental agreements, subscriptions and loan tenures use.

How to Use

  1. Pick the start and end dates (order does not matter).
  2. Click “Count Months”.
  3. Read the full months, remaining days and total days.

Formula

months = (year₂ − year₁) × 12 + (month₂ − month₁), minus 1 if the end day-of-month is before the start day-of-month. Remaining days = days from the anniversary date to the end date.

Worked Example

2026-01-01 to 2026-10-13: 9 full months (Jan 1 → Oct 1) + 12 remaining days (Oct 1 → Oct 13) = 285 total days.

How It Works, In Plain Words

The tool counts months the way a calendar does, not the way a stopwatch does. First it puts your two dates in order — the FAQ confirms the earlier one is treated as the start automatically, so order never matters. Then it applies the formula above: the year difference times 12, plus the month difference. For the worked example that is (2026 − 2026) × 12 + (10 − 1) = 9. One correction follows: if the end day-of-month falls before the start day-of-month, the last month has not completed, so one is taken away. Here the end day, 13, is not before the start day, 1, so nothing is deducted. The tool then stands on the anniversary date — 1 October, nine months after 1 January — and counts the leftover days to 13 October: 12 remaining days. Finally it reports the plain day count alongside: 285 total days. Three numbers, three jobs: full months for anniversaries and tenures, remaining days for the part-month, total days for anything billed or measured by the day.

Real-World Uses

First, a tenancy or subscription that runs by the month. The What Is section names rental agreements, subscriptions and loan tenures as users of this convention, and the worked example is exactly that shape of question: 1 January to 13 October 2026 is 9 full months and 12 days, so nine monthly payments have completed and a part-month is running. Second, checking a notice period or a contract milestone. When a date months ahead matters, the anniversary rule decides whether the period has truly elapsed: a month completes only when the same day-number arrives, which is why January 31 to February 28 counts as 0 full months here. Third, planning in two units at once. The FAQ contrasts this tool with the Weeks Between calculator — elapsed 7-day blocks against calendar months — and the total-days figure, 285 in the example, lets you sanity-check a month answer against the raw day count before you rely on either.

Benefits

  • True calendar months, not days ÷ 30.44
  • The same convention contracts and subscriptions use
  • Order-independent
  • Remaining days kept exact

Features of Our Tool

  • Instant results in your browser
  • No sign-up, no download, 100% free
  • Works on mobile, tablet and desktop
  • Clear step-by-step explanation below the tool
  • Private — your entries never leave your device.

Common Mistakes

  • Dividing days by 30.44 and calling it months — close but not calendar months
  • Counting the start month twice (Jan 1 → Feb 1 is 1 month, not 2)
  • Forgetting day-of-month: Jan 31 → Feb 28 is not a full month by this rule (the 31st never arrives in February)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The seductive shortcut is dividing total days by 30.44, which the Benefits list explicitly rejects: 285 ÷ 30.44 lands close to 9, but close is not a calendar count, and the error grows with the span. Second, do not read the remaining days as a fraction of a month to add on. The 12 remaining days in the example belong to a part-month that has not completed; folding them into the headline figure invents a precision the convention does not use. Third, remember that the tool needs both dates. Leave either picker empty and it answers ‘Please pick both dates.’ rather than guessing — a deliberate stop, not a fault, so fill both boxes before concluding anything from the result.

FAQ

How many months between January 1 and October 13, 2026?

9 full months and 12 days.

Is 90 days equal to 3 months?

Only roughly — calendar months vary, so 90 days spans slightly different month counts depending on which months.

How does the calculator treat January 31 to February 28?

As 0 full months, because the 31st never arrives in February — the standard anniversary convention.

Does order matter?

No — the earlier date is treated as the start automatically.

What is the difference from the Weeks Between calculator?

Weeks count elapsed 7-day blocks; months count calendar months — different units for different planning needs.

What does the tool say if I enter the dates backwards?

Exactly the same result. The two dates are swapped into order before anything is counted, which is why the How to Use list says order does not matter — 9 full months and 12 days either way for the worked example.

Why is the total-days figure shown as well?

Because months alone can mislead: the same span is 9 full months, 12 remaining days and 285 total days, and the day count is the one to use for anything measured or billed by the day.
