Hijri Date Converter

Convert any Gregorian date to its Hijri (Islamic) date in seconds: pick a date and this free converter shows the Hijri day, month name and year AH, together with the Gregorian date and its weekday, using the calculated Islamic civil calendar built into your browser.

What Is a Hijri Date Converter?

A Hijri date converter translates a date from the Gregorian calendar, the solar calendar used for everyday life in most of the world, into the Hijri calendar, the lunar calendar that fixes the dates of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Hajj and the Islamic New Year. Muslims in Pakistan and around the world use both calendars every day: the Gregorian date for work, school and official forms, and the Hijri date for religious life, family events and historical records.

This converter uses the Islamic civil calendar built into your web browser, the standard calculated calendar known as islamic-civil, so the conversion happens instantly on your own device. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere. Pick any date, past or future, and you will see the matching Hijri day, month and year, along with the weekday.

How to Use the Hijri Date Converter

  1. Click or tap the date box and choose the Gregorian date you want to convert, or press the Today button to start from the current date.
  2. Click “Convert to Hijri”.
  3. Read the Hijri date: the day, the month name and the year AH.
  4. Check the Gregorian date and weekday shown underneath, so you can be sure the right day was converted.
  5. Remember the note under the result: this is the calculated calendar, and the officially observed date in Pakistan can differ by one day.

How the Hijri Calendar Works

The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar of 12 months. Each month begins with the new moon and lasts 29 or 30 days, so a Hijri year has 354 days, or 355 in a leap year. That makes the Islamic year about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar year of 365 or 366 days. Because of that difference, every Islamic date moves about 11 days earlier in each Gregorian year: Ramadan, for example, begins roughly 11 days earlier each year and cycles through all the seasons over about 33 years.

The calendar counts years from the Hijrah, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE, which is why Hijri years carry the letters AH, short for Anno Hegirae, “in the year of the Hijrah”. In the calculated civil calendar the months alternate 30 and 29 days, and a leap day is added to the last month, Dhul Hijjah, in 11 years of every 30-year cycle, which keeps the calculated calendar closely in step with the moon over long periods.

Calculated Calendar vs Moon Sighting

Please read this before relying on a converted date. This tool uses the calculated, tabular Islamic calendar (islamic-civil), a fixed arithmetic calendar that can be worked out for any date, past or future. In Pakistan, however, the official start of each Hijri month is announced by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee after the new moon is actually sighted, and that observed date can differ from the calculated date by one day in either direction. For fasting, Eid and other religious observances, always follow the official announcement; use this converter for planning, study and everyday reference.

The 12 Hijri Months

In the calculated calendar the odd-numbered months have 30 days and the even-numbered months have 29, except that Dhul Hijjah gains a 30th day in a leap year.

1Muharram30
2Safar29
3Rabi al-Awwal30
4Rabi al-Thani29

8Shaban29

How the Conversion Works

The converter counts the number of days between your Gregorian date and the start of the Islamic era, then divides that span into Hijri years of 354 or 355 days and months of 29 or 30 days, following the fixed islamic-civil rules. Your browser does this arithmetic for you using its built-in international calendar system, so the answer is instant and identical on every device.

Worked Examples

Thursday 22 October 2026 converts to 10 Jumada al-Awwal 1448 AH. Wednesday 1 January 2025 converts to 1 Rajab 1446 AH. Monday 8 July 2024 converts to 1 Muharram 1446 AH, the first day of the Islamic year 1446. Try these dates in the converter and you will see exactly these results, each with the weekday shown for the Gregorian date.

Benefits of Using the Hijri Date Converter

  • The weekday is shown as well, which helps when checking certificates, letters and old documents
  • An honest note about moon sighting, so you know when the observed date may differ by a day

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating the calculated date as the official observed date — in Pakistan the Ruet-e-Hilal announcement decides, and it can differ by one day
  • Expecting Ramadan or Eid on the same Gregorian date every year — they move about 11 days earlier annually
  • Forgetting that a Hijri day begins at sunset, so the evening before already belongs to the next Islamic date
  • Comparing AH and Gregorian years as if they were the same length when reading historical dates

Frequently Asked Questions

Which calendar does this converter use?

It uses the islamic-civil calendar, the standard calculated (tabular) Islamic calendar built into modern browsers. It is an arithmetic calendar with fixed month lengths, so it can convert any date instantly. It is not the Umm al-Qura calendar used officially in Saudi Arabia, and it is not based on local moon sighting.

Why can the Hijri date in Pakistan differ by one day?

Because Pakistan fixes the start of each month by the sighting of the new moon, announced by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. Weather, horizon conditions and the moon’s position decide when the crescent is seen, so the observed month can begin a day before or after the calculated date. For religious duties, follow the official announcement.

Why does Ramadan start about 11 days earlier each year?

A Hijri year has 354 or 355 days, while a Gregorian year has 365 or 366. The gap of about 11 days means every Islamic month, including Ramadan, begins roughly 11 days earlier in each successive Gregorian year, moving through all four seasons over a cycle of about 33 years.

What does AH mean?

AH stands for Anno Hegirae, Latin for “in the year of the Hijrah”. Year 1 AH began in 622 CE, the year of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) migration from Makkah to Madinah. Because Hijri years are shorter than Gregorian years, the AH year number grows faster: 1446 AH began during 2024 CE.

When does a Hijri day begin?

A Hijri day begins at sunset, not at midnight. So on the evening that a new month is announced, the Islamic date has already changed even though the Gregorian date changes a few hours later at midnight. Keep this in mind when converting dates for evening events such as Taraweeh or Iftar.

How many days are in a Hijri year?

A common Hijri year has 354 days and a leap year has 355, the extra day being added to Dhul Hijjah, the last month. In the calculated calendar, 11 of every 30 years are leap years, which keeps the average month very close to the true cycle of the moon.
