How Much Fertilizer Does Barani Wheat Need Per Acre? Punjab’s Rainfall Zones Explained

Barani wheat is grown on rainfall alone, so the fertilizer dose that suits a wet northern district will not suit a dry southern one. The Agriculture Department Punjab answers this with three rainfall zones, each with its own per-acre dose of DAP, urea and SOP. This guide explains the zones and the doses, using the department’s release of 14 October 2026.

If you want the figures for your own farm straight away, the Barani Wheat Fertilizer Calculator works them out by zone and acreage. A bag, throughout this guide, is the standard 50 kg bag used in the recommendation, and every dose is given both in bags and in kilograms.

What Does Barani Mean, and Why Does Rainfall Set the Dose?

Barani means rain-fed. A barani crop depends on stored soil moisture and on whatever rain falls during the season, with no canal or tube-well irrigation to fall back on. Where rainfall is higher, the crop grows more strongly, can take up more nutrients and yields more, so a larger dose pays for itself. Where rainfall is low, the crop cannot use extra fertilizer without water, so the recommended dose is smaller and less money is put at risk.

That is why a single province-wide dose would be wrong for Punjab. Instead, the department groups the barani districts into low, medium and high rainfall zones and publishes a dose for each one.

The Three Rainfall Zones and Their Doses

Find your district below. All doses are bags per acre, and one bag weighs 50 kg.

Low Rainfall Zone: 1 Bag DAP, 1 Bag Urea, 0.5 Bag SOP

This zone covers Rajanpur, Layyah, Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Bhakkar, Mianwali, Jand, Pindi Gheb and the barani parts of Khushab. The dose is 1 bag of DAP, 1 bag of urea and half a bag of SOP or MOP per acre — in weight, 50 kg of DAP, 50 kg of urea and 25 kg of SOP per acre.

Medium Rainfall Zone: 1.25 Bags DAP, 1.25 Bags Urea, 0.5 Bag SOP

This zone covers Chakwal, Talagang and Pind Dadan Khan. The dose is 1.25 bags of DAP, 1.25 bags of urea and half a bag of SOP per acre — 62.5 kg of DAP, 62.5 kg of urea and 25 kg of SOP per acre.

High Rainfall Zone: 1.5 Bags DAP, 1.5 Bags Urea, 1 Bag SOP

This zone covers Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Narowal, Sohawa, Gujrat, Kharian and Shakargarh. The dose is 1.5 bags of DAP, 1.5 bags of urea and 1 full bag of SOP or MOP per acre — 75 kg of DAP, 75 kg of urea and 50 kg of SOP per acre.

The pattern is worth noticing: DAP and urea rise together as rainfall increases, while SOP stays at half a bag in the low and medium zones and rises to a full bag only in the high rainfall zone. The same doses in a table:

What DAP, Urea and SOP Each Supply

DAP is the phosphorus source in the dose, and it also supplies some nitrogen. Phosphorus supports strong early root growth, which matters greatly in barani fields, because deep, well-developed roots are how the crop reaches moisture stored lower in the soil.

Urea supplies nitrogen, the nutrient behind leafy growth, tillering and a dark green crop. Most of the nitrogen in the dose comes from urea, with a smaller share arriving with the DAP.

SOP, sulphate of potash, supplies potash (potassium), which helps the plant manage water and withstand dry spells — a real advantage where the next rain is never guaranteed. The recommendation is written as SOP/MOP, so muriate of potash can be used at the same bag rate where SOP is unavailable.

Worked Example: 10 Acres in the Medium Zone

Take a farmer near Chakwal with 10 acres of barani wheat. Chakwal sits in the medium rainfall zone, so the dose is 1.25 bags of DAP, 1.25 bags of urea and 0.5 bag of SOP per acre.

Multiplying by 10 acres gives 12.5 bags of DAP (625 kg), 12.5 bags of urea (625 kg) and 5 bags of SOP (250 kg), which is 30 bags in total. The same multiplication works for any farm size: the per-acre dose times your acres, worked out separately for each fertilizer.

Seed is a separate purchase. The recommended barani seed rate is 40 to 50 kg per acre, so this farm needs 400 to 500 kg of seed. The Seed Rate Calculator turns a seed rate into kilograms and 50 kg bags, and can adjust for germination below 100 per cent.

When and How to Apply

The department’s advice is to apply the fertilizer at land preparation and sowing time, so that the nutrients are already in the soil where the young roots can reach them from the start of growth.

Drill sowing improves efficiency, because seed and fertilizer are placed in rows at the right depth instead of being scattered on the surface, so less of both is wasted. Plan around the recommended sowing window of 15 October to 15 November: have seed and fertilizer bought, stored dry and ready before the window opens, so a delayed start does not push sowing past the recommended dates.

A Note on Soil Testing

The zone doses in this guide are general guidance for barani wheat, not a prescription for one particular field. Soil differs from village to village, and a soil test shows what your land already holds and what it lacks. A soil test result, and the advice of your local agriculture office, should always take priority over any general guide or online calculator — including the tools on this site.

Planning the Season’s Budget

Fertilizer is only one of the season’s costs. Seed, land preparation and labour add up, and where a tube well supports the crop at a critical stage, its electricity adds up too; the Pakistan Electricity Bill Calculator gives a quick estimate of a tube-well bill. You can find all of this site’s farming tools together on the Agriculture Calculators page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the fertilizer dose increase with rainfall?

More rain means more growth, and a bigger crop can take up and use more nutrients. In a dry area the same bags would sit partly unused in dry soil, so the recommended dose is kept lower.

How many bags do I need for 5 acres in the low rainfall zone?

Five acres at 1 bag of DAP, 1 bag of urea and 0.5 bag of SOP per acre comes to 5 bags of DAP, 5 bags of urea and 2.5 bags of SOP, which is 12.5 bags in total.

Can I use MOP instead of SOP?

Yes. The recommendation is written as SOP/MOP at the same rate, so the half bag or full bag in your zone’s dose can be either product, depending on what your dealer stocks.

My district is not listed. Which dose should I use?

Use the zone whose rainfall best matches your area, and confirm the choice with your local agriculture office before you buy. Areas on the border between two zones are exactly where local advice matters most.

When should the fertilizer be applied?

At land preparation and sowing, within the recommended sowing window of 15 October to 15 November. The whole dose for barani wheat goes on as the crop is sown, ideally placed with a drill.
